Reading Challenge 2016 – The Casual Vacancy

As I said in my previous post, I’m doing the Reading Challenge 2016! (Here‘s the link to get involved)

2016 reading challenge

The first book I read this year was The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling. I’ve had this book for about 2 years, but hadn’t properly got around to reading it. I read the first chapter a few times before but couldn’t really get into it, however, this time I perservered and I’m so glad I did because I absolutely loved this book!

Naturally, I was wary of reading J. K. Rowling’s work after Harry Potter – because how could she top it? – but The Casual Vacancy is only similar to the Harry Potter series in one way, the fact that I was totally captivated. ¬†Each character were so interesting and J. K. Rowling didn’t shy away from anything in their lives which was totally shocking but refreshing at the same time.

At first, I struggled to keep up with all the characters but after a while I felt like I knew them¬†better than I knew my friends, what with J. K. Rowling slowly seeping out all their deepest darkest secrets. At one stage I was so impatient to learn a character’s secret that I googled it and ended up spoiling the ending for myself something I massively regret! (I absolutely do not recommend Googling this book AT ALL if you’re going to read it!)

I don’t to give away any of the plot as I don’t want to ruin it but I definitely recommend giving it a read! The beginning is a bit slow and keepng up with the characters to begin with is a bit hard but it is most definitely worth it! This really isn’t the sort of book I normally read, maybe it’s my love of gossip that made me love this book so much, or the how eye-opening it was but either way I absolutely loved it!

So this book checks off ‘A book I bought so long ago, but still haven’t read’ and ‘A book by a female author’. The next book I’m reading is Our Endless Numbered Days by Clare Fuller!
