Last week I went to a fitness class. It’s a ladies only martial arts and kickboxing class.

I was so anxious about going by myself and I had absolutely no idea what to expect. The mix of meeting a new group of people and doing something I’ve never done before is terrifying. Small talk + attempting something coordinated for the first time = a very anxious Sarah!

Whenever I do anything like this, I often find myself sitting in the car park outside panicking. Willing myself to go in and trying to convince myself everything will be fine.

The whole small talk with new people situation is stressful on its own. Forcing myself to talk, being the dreaded new person and remembering names all mixed together is torture when you’re shy.

Now add in the actual reason you’re out and about! A fitness class that involves a lot of high kicks, punching and general exercise. Being the new person and trying to keep up with everyone else is so scary! I am deeply concerned with what people think of me, so that was an extra pressure I put on myself as I was concerned I looked ridiculous!

Anxieties aside, I had a blast at my fitness class and though I ached terribly the next day I can’t wait to go back for a second class! I think the moral of this story is that even though you’re scared or nervous, the chances of you having a great time is very high!
